What Is Fluke? 

As you’ve learned above, a fluke is a type of fish. It is part of the Paralichthyidae family and is classified as a marine flatfish. You’ll often find these fish swimming in the Atlantic Ocean just off the East Coast of Canada and the USA. 

It’s pretty easily identifiable by its ocellated body spots, and it’s also an incredibly fast swimmer. Typically it lives off a diet of smaller sea creatures such as squid, shrimp, sand lance, and others. 

Generally speaking, Fluke will stay deep in the ocean for most of the year until the springtime when they will move inshore to bays, beaches, and canals for spawning. The fish itself is actually pretty crucial to both commercial and recreational fishing alike. 

You can try using live or cut baits to catch them along with artificial lures, though the most recommended method for catching these fast-swimmers is trawling. 

For now, it’s totally legal to catch, sell, or buy Fluke fish and so they’re quite easily accessible if you’re hoping to try them. However, this accessibility may start to dwindle over time.

This is because Fluke has seen a significant decline that is said to be caused by overfishing. So get it while you can, who knows how much longer we’ll still be eating this flatfish.

Fluke has a stunning very delicate white flesh that is unbelievably tasty. It has a pretty mild taste and texture that is light yet luscious. Lots of people really enjoy Fluke because it doesn’t have that overpowering fishy taste that can be too much for some palettes. 

Known as the chameleons of the sea this fish can actually change both its color and texture to blend in with its surroundings. Pretty cool, right? 

Well, perhaps it can also shape-shift into other fish? Not literally, but it does taste like many other fish options out there. Some describe it as closer to Halibut, while others say Tilapia, and others Branzino. Some say it’s a mixture of all three.

As part of the flounder species, it also has a very similar flavor and a similarly lean meat. The real difference comes in the form of its texture.

The beauty of Fluke fish is that there are so many different ways to cook it up. Each one as delicious as the next. I can guarantee regardless of the method you choose, you can be excited for one tasty meal. 

When you purchase Fluke you’ll typically have two options; purchase in whole or in fillets. I’d recommend those new to fish preparation to opt for the fillets as they will be much easier to prepare.

If you are a fish filleting extraordinaire then feel free to opt for the whole version. Once you have your fillets, all that’s left to do is follow your favorite recipe, and voila. A meal for one ready in minutes. 

It’s worth noting that you can eat Fluke cooked or raw. So if you have a love of raw fish dishes then you can’t pick a better fish than Fluke. In fact, even many professional chefs say that Fluke is one of the fish that reign supreme. 

Fluke tastes amazing when baked, and pan-fried. Grilling or deep-frying it also tastes divine. Be sure to serve deep-fried Fluke with tons of sauce or dip! Although my favorite was to use Fluke is to use the flakes for fish tacos – yum.
